... sent to my work address:
Dear Sir/Madame
I am writing to request permission to use the image (http://www.beaverandsteve.com/wiki/images/2/2d/140_2.png); in a digital poster for my GCSE coursework. By letting me use this image it will help to boost my mark and get me a good grade which will help me later in life.
Thank you for your time, I look forward to your reply.
George
There are several things that struck me as quite odd:
1) how on earth did this young ragamuffin get my work email address?
2) given that my work email begins with 'james-t' how come he couldn't tell if I was a man or a (french) lady?
3) He appears to be telling me that if I don't grant him permission to use this image I will ruin his entire life.
I'd almost believe it's some sort of incredibly obscure spam, but when a young man's future is in my hands I don't know if I can risk ignoring it.
On my way home last night I passed a pair of ladies boots lying in the middle of a staircase leading up to a building. This seemed unremarkable at first, but when I looked again I realised I couldn't quite figure out what situation could have led to them being there.
Had their improbable heels caused such terrible pain that the owner had been forced to discard them half way through her ascent, deciding she would rather spend the rest of the day barefoot than endure another moment of their agony?
Had the zips simultaneously failed at a crucial point in her climb, separating her from her footwear and casting her to the base of the stairs from whence she had to be rushed to hospital, without even time to retrieve the offending items before they left?
Had the owner's partner, on returning to a nearby domicile unexpectedly early, caught her in an act of unspeakable deviancy with another and in an act of vengeance cast her much beloved boots from the window to the stairs below?
Or perhaps the rapture has finally come upon us and a believer was saved from the earthly plane upon this very spot (leaving her boots behind because everybody knows you don't need shoes in heaven)?
London is a city full of mysteries. And boots.
